Apartment cleaning is part of Homi's house cleaning service in Amman, and it is one of the bookings we take most often, because so much of the city lives in flats.
The flat as a unit of work
An apartment is a single-floor property with everything within a few steps of everything else. That shape makes one cleaner working through the whole place the right answer almost every time: no stairs, no equipment carried between levels, no splitting the property into zones. The cleaner starts at one end, works room by room, and finishes with the floors on the way out. Sending two people rarely halves the time, because they end up working around each other in the same corridor.
What sets the time needed
Floor area matters far less than people assume. Bedroom count and bathroom count drive the visit, because those are the rooms with surfaces, edges and fittings rather than open space. A large living room takes very little time relative to its size.
A studio or one-bedroom is a short, contained visit: one bathroom, one kitchen, one sleeping area, done properly in a morning slot.
A three-bedroom family flat is a different proposition: three bedrooms to make up and dust, two bathrooms, a kitchen in daily use, a hall and a balcony. It is comfortably more than double the studio, and it is the size where people usually move to a regular visit.
Bathrooms are the single biggest variable
Nothing changes the length of a flat clean like the number of bathrooms and their condition. A bathroom is slow work: sanitary ware, taps, mirror, tiles, screen or curtain, and floor, all in a small space that has to be done in sequence and given time for products to act.
Two bathrooms in a two-bedroom flat is a meaningfully longer visit than one. Tell us the number when you book. It is the detail most often left out, and the one that most often makes a visit run short. Heavy limescale that has built up over years is deep cleaning work rather than something a routine visit will shift.
Balconies, halls and entrances
Almost every flat in Amman has at least one balcony, and it is the reason the inside gets dusty as fast as it does. Dust settles outside, blows in through the doors and lands on everything within a few metres of them. A balcony swept and washed down makes a visible difference indoors for weeks afterwards.
Balconies are included in the visit. Say if yours is used for storage or laundry, since a crowded balcony takes longer.
Entrance halls take more punishment than anywhere else: shoes, bags, and the shared stairwell dust that comes in every time the door opens. The inside face of the front door and its frame are done with the hall.
Getting into the building
Building details save everyone time, so include them when you book:
Floor and lift
Which floor you are on, and whether the building has a working lift. A fifth floor with no lift is worth knowing about in advance.
Caretaker
If a caretaker controls the entrance, tell us, and tell him. It avoids a cleaner standing at a locked door.
Parking
Many Amman streets are narrow and parking is tight. If there is somewhere specific to stop, or a nearby street that works better, say so.
Flat number
Building name or number, flat number, and a landmark. Map pins in some neighbourhoods are approximate.
When you are at work
Plenty of clients are not home during the visit, and that is normal. The practical arrangement is to be present for the first visit, since half an hour is enough to walk through the flat and point out what matters to you. After that you can hand over a key, or leave one with the caretaker, for later visits.
If you would rather not hand over a key, book a slot when someone is home. Evening slots work well for this.
Regular visits or one-off
A one-off visit is a catch-up. It resets the flat, and it suits the run-up to guests arriving or the end of a busy stretch.
A regular weekly or fortnightly visit does something a one-off cannot. Because the basics never get far out of hand, each visit spends its time on what is normally skipped, such as under the bed, the tops of cupboards and the balcony rail, so the flat drifts upward to a standard a single catch-up visit never reaches. The same cleaner also learns the flat, which removes most of the instructions after the second visit.
If you mainly want ironing, bed changes and general upkeep on a recurring basis, look at maid service. For a short, defined task, hourly cleaning is the simpler booking.
Move-in and move-out cleans
An empty flat is easier in one sense, with no furniture to work around and no belongings to be careful with. It is heavier in another, because everything is in scope. Inside every cupboard and wardrobe, inside the kitchen units, behind where the appliances stood, all the skirting.
These are almost always a deep cleaning booking rather than a standard visit, and they need to be scheduled with enough hours in the day. Book it after the furniture has gone, not before.
Before the visit and how to book
Clear surfaces of personal items, put laundry in one place, and clear the sink if you want the kitchen done properly. The cleaner is there to clean, not to decide where your things live. Say if any room is off limits.
Tell us the bedroom count, the bathroom count, the floor and the lift, and pick a date. Houses and villas over several floors work differently and are covered under villa cleaning.
