Limescale and Amman's hard water
The white crust on the taps, the shower head, the shower screen and the ring around the base of the mixer is limescale, the mineral left behind every time hard water dries on a surface. It is not dirt and a general cleaner does nothing to it.
Limescale needs an acidic descaling product and, more importantly, it needs dwell time. The product has to sit on the deposit long enough to dissolve it, which is minutes rather than seconds. This is why a rushed wipe never removes it: the surface looks wet, then dries, and the crust is still there. Scrubbing harder does not help, because it polishes the metal around the scale and can scratch chrome and glass.
Shower heads with blocked jets are soaked rather than attacked at the face. Screens are done panel by panel, since the deposit is thickest along the bottom edge and in the runner.
