Suit dry cleaning is part of Homi's laundry and dry cleaning service in Amman. Suits are collected from your door, cleaned in solvent as a complete set, pressed on shaped finishing equipment and returned hung and covered.
Always clean the jacket and trousers together
This is the single most important rule with a suit, and the one broken most often. Trousers get worn more, dirty faster and are sent for cleaning on their own; the jacket goes back in the wardrobe.
Every clean takes a very small amount of colour out of the cloth. Do that four or five times to the trousers and not at all to the jacket, and the two pieces stop matching. In daylight the difference is obvious, and it cannot be corrected, because you cannot re-dye half a suit. At that point you own a jacket and a pair of trousers rather than a suit.
So send both pieces every time, even when only one of them looks like it needs it. If you own a three-piece, send the waistcoat as well.
What is actually inside a jacket
A jacket is not one layer of cloth. Between the outer fabric and the lining sits an internal structure: interlining across the chest, padding at the shoulders, and on better garments a canvas chest piece made of horsehair or wool that is stitched in rather than glued.
That canvas is what makes a jacket sit properly. It gives the chest its shape, holds the roll of the lapel and lets the whole garment mould to the wearer over time. It is also several different materials layered together, each behaving differently when it gets wet.
Cheaper jackets use fused interlining instead, bonded to the outer cloth with adhesive. Heat and moisture break that bond, and once it goes the cloth bubbles across the chest and lapels. That damage is not repairable.
Why water ruins a suit and solvent does not
Wool shrinks in water. The fibres are covered in fine scales that interlock when they are agitated warm and wet, and they do not unlock afterwards.
In a jacket that shrinkage is not uniform, because the outer wool, the canvas, the interlining and the lining all move by different amounts. They are stitched to each other, so they pull against one another as they dry. The chest ripples, the lapel loses its roll, the shoulders twist and the lining bags or splits. Pressing does not fix any of it, because the layers are now different sizes.
Dry cleaning uses solvent, which dissolves body oils and grease without swelling the fibres. Nothing shrinks, nothing pulls, and the jacket comes out the shape it went in. That is the entire reason suits go to a dry cleaner rather than a washing machine.
How often should a suit be cleaned?
Less often than most people assume. Cleaning is not free of cost to the garment. Every cycle involves solvent, agitation and heat, and over many cleans that gradually wears the cloth, dulls the colour and stiffens the lining.
For a suit in regular office rotation, two or three times a year is reasonable. For one worn occasionally, once a season is plenty. Clean it sooner if it has been somewhere smoky, if food or drink has gone down it, or if it has been rained on.
Rotating two or three suits extends the life of all of them, because each gets a day or two to recover between wears.
Brushing and airing between cleans
Most of what a suit picks up in a day is dust and surface soil, and a clothes brush removes it in under a minute. Brush downwards with the nap after each wear, concentrating on the shoulders and collar.
Then hang it somewhere with air moving, not straight into a packed wardrobe, and leave it overnight. Wool recovers its shape as it dries out, and airing removes most everyday odour without any cleaning at all.
Blot spills immediately, never rub. Rubbing pushes the spill into the weave and lifts the nap, leaving a shiny patch more visible than the mark.
How your suit is handled
Inspection
Both pieces are checked together for marks, shine, loose buttons, split linings and existing wear, and anything found is logged before cleaning.
Pre-treatment
Collar and cuff soiling, food marks and water-based spills are worked by hand, since solvent alone will not lift them.
Solvent cleaning
Jacket and trousers are cleaned in the same load, so both pieces receive exactly the same treatment.
Shaped finishing
Pressed with steam on forms built for shoulders, lapels and legs, so the structure is set rather than flattened. Trouser creases are put back where they belong.
How suit dry cleaning is priced
Per piece, with a two-piece suit counted and handled as a set. Waistcoats and overcoats are counted separately. There is a minimum order value, so a single suit is often worth sending alongside a wash bundle.
You see the price before you confirm the booking, and there are no hidden fees.
Hanging and storage
Use a broad wooden hanger that matches the width of your shoulders. Wire hangers put the whole weight of the jacket onto two thin points and eventually deform the shoulder line permanently.
Hang trousers by the cuffs or over a bar rather than folding them into a drawer, give the suit space on the rail, and empty the pockets before hanging, since a wallet left in an inside pocket stretches the cloth out of shape.
For long-term storage, use a breathable cotton cover rather than plastic. Plastic traps moisture against wool, and trapped moisture invites moths and mildew.
For everyday shirts and trousers that do not need solvent, see wash and iron. Pressing only is covered on ironing.
