Bathroom cleaning is part of Homi's house cleaning service in Amman. A bathroom is mostly a chemistry job rather than a scrubbing job, and knowing which product to leave sitting where is what separates a real clean from a wipe-down.

Limescale and Amman's hard water

The white crust on the taps, the shower head, the shower screen and the ring around the base of the mixer is limescale, the mineral left behind every time hard water dries on a surface. It is not dirt and a general cleaner does nothing to it.

Limescale needs an acidic descaling product and, more importantly, it needs dwell time. The product has to sit on the deposit long enough to dissolve it, which is minutes rather than seconds. This is why a rushed wipe never removes it: the surface looks wet, then dries, and the crust is still there. Scrubbing harder does not help, because it polishes the metal around the scale and can scratch chrome and glass.

Shower heads with blocked jets are soaked rather than attacked at the face. Screens are done panel by panel, since the deposit is thickest along the bottom edge and in the runner.

Soap scum is not the same as limescale

The two get treated as one thing and they are not. Soap scum is a greasy, cloudy film left by soap, shampoo and body oils; limescale is a hard mineral deposit. They need different products, and one that lifts one often does nothing to the other. On a shower screen you usually have both, layered, with scum on top and scale underneath, so one pass with one spray leaves it half-done.

The team works the two in sequence, degreasing the film first so the descaler can actually reach the mineral beneath it.

Grout, silicone and an honest limit

Grout is porous. Over the years it darkens, and in wet corners it grows mould. The silicone bead along the edge of the bath and around the shower tray is the usual worst offender, because mould roots into the silicone itself rather than sitting on it.

Here is the honest limit. Stained grout lightens, often considerably, and surface mould can be killed and removed. But grout stained through, or silicone gone black inside, will not come back to white with any cleaning product. At that point the fix is regrouting or replacing the bead, which is a repair job rather than a cleaning job. You will be told which of the two you have rather than being sold hours against something that cannot change.

Sanitising the WC properly

A WC is not cleaned by putting something down the bowl and flushing. Under the rim is where the deposit builds and where the smell comes from, and it needs a dedicated angled application with time to work. The seat is cleaned on both faces, and the hinges are taken apart where the design allows, because that is the one spot almost everyone skips.

The outside of the pan, the cistern, the flush plate or handle, and the base where the pan meets the floor all get done. The joint at the floor matters more than it sounds: that is where residue collects and stays.

Cleaning and sanitising are two different steps

Cleaning removes the soil. Sanitising kills what is left. They happen in that order and never at the same time, because a disinfectant applied on top of soap film or limescale mostly reacts with the residue instead of the surface.

So the sequence is: clear the surface, clean it, rinse, then apply disinfectant and leave it its stated contact time before removing. A disinfectant sprayed and wiped straight off has not disinfected anything. Cloths are colour-separated between the WC area and the basin and bath, and they are not shared.

Mirrors, chrome and the extractor grille

These come last, once the wet work is finished, so nothing gets splashed after it has been polished. Mirrors and glass are finished dry to leave no streaks, and chrome on taps, towel rails and the shower riser is buffed rather than left to air-dry, which is what causes new water spotting within a day.

The extractor fan grille is taken down where it is removable and the dust washed out of it. A clogged grille moves very little air, and poor airflow is the main reason mould keeps returning to the same corner.

Drains, smells and airing out

Persistent bathroom smell is usually the drains rather than the surfaces: the basin waste, the shower gully and the floor drain. Those are cleared and treated during the visit. Afterwards, open a window and run the fan; the products need airing, and a bathroom that dries quickly stays clean far longer than one left damp.

What actually drives the length of a visit

The number of bathrooms, more than anything else. A flat with one bathroom and a house with four are completely different bookings even at the same floor area, because each bathroom repeats the same full sequence from scratch. Whether there is a bath, a separate shower enclosure, or both, changes it too. Clear the shelves and the shower tray of bottles before the team arrives, because a shelf covered in products is a shelf that gets worked around instead of cleaned.

We cover all of Amman, including Abdoun, Dabouq, Khalda, Deir Ghbar, Shmeisani, Tla' Al Ali, Jubeiha and Sweileh.

How to book

Choose house cleaning, tell us how many bathrooms and whether limescale is the main concern, and pick a date. You can book on the website or call us instead. Work is booked by the hour with a minimum booking length. We operate 9 AM to 9 PM, seven days a week, and our mobile app is launching soon.

Be realistic about heavy build-up: a bathroom with years of thick limescale on the screen and taps is a deep clean job, not a standard hourly visit, and booking it as one hour will disappoint. Bath mats and any upholstered items are furniture cleaning and are handled separately.
